For the past year, I have been working in HMP Low Newton with the female prisoners on a therapeutic writing programme. It has been incredible to be able to support the prisoners in their creativity, using writing as a coping mechanism and expression outlet.
At the end of the programme, we were lucky enough to receive financial support to produce a book of the pieces written in and out of the creative sessions. The moving pieces share the voices of the unheard, experiences of trauma and recovery, as well as hopes and dreams for the future.
Tales from Low Newton Jail was completely co-produced with the prisoners, from the content, to the cover, to the book title. We had two celebratory launches, where each person received a copy of the book, alongside readings, and celebrating their achievement.
The book is available as an e-book or paperback from Amazon, bookshops, and Write on the Tyne shop.
